Stay Alert

By: Ros Edralin

Whenever I receive loose change, I don't usually keep it inside my wallet. Oftentimes, it goes to the little pockets inside my bag. So one day while I was de-cluttering items from my bag, I realized I've got a handful of coins already. As usual, I separated the 1s, 5s, and 10s. Looking at the stack of one peso coins, I noticed something odd. As I looked closely, it appeared that one of the 1-peso coins is actually an amusement game token. Where did it come from?! I tried to recall where I spent my money for the last two weeks. Was it mixed with the loose change I got from a convenience store? from the public transportation? from the department store? I really have no idea. Maybe the one who handed it over to me didn't also notice that it's not a one peso coin. What's even worse is that this isn't the first time it happened to me. How many amusement game tokens are there in circulation??

A friend of mine shared his experience one morning when he went home coming from the graveyard shift. He was exhausted so his mind was like flying elsewhere. He didn't pay much attention to the amount he was handing over for payment. He almost paid double for cab fare. Good thing that the driver was honest and returned his money. My friend was lucky that day.

The shared scenarios may be of little value, but looking at the bigger perspective of things, our lapses in paying attention to details can have a huge impact in our personal life and even in our careers --- especially when it is about money matters.

Most of us are always on the rush. We get occupied by a lot of the tasks we need to accomplish each day that sometimes we already lack the alertness for the little usual day-to-day transactions that transpire outside our task lists.

Businesses depend on their employees to deliver the services according to set standards and policies. Families are dependent on the employed family members to pay for bills, buy food, provide shelter, and other expenses. Thus it is our responsibility to be alert at all times. Otherwise, we could be easy targets for scammers or robbers, and worse, we might end up losing our jobs.
